Tea exports turn tepid, with markets melting away
 23/08/2008
India, which produces 25 per cent of all the tea in the world, is losing ground in virtually every market, accounting for a mere 10 per cent of the global sales now, says a new study. "India’s international competitiveness in tea exports has been on a decline, with its share of exports declining from 19 per cent in 1990", the study by rating agency ICRA has found. Tea exports have taken a knock, with a 29 per cent fall in 2007-08, triggered by a collapse of major global markets such as Iraq and rise in production in countries like Kenya and Turkey, the study observed. "During 2007-08, exports declined by 28.7 per cent in volume terms, 25.2 per cent in rupee terms and 16 per cent in dollar terms", the study elaborated. Exports slumped to 155.59 million kg in 2007-08, from 218.15 million kg in 2006-07, while in value terms they declined to Rs 1,530 crore in 2007-08, as compared to Rs 2,045 crore in the same period of 2006-07, the study added. In the early 1980s, tea exports accounted for 40 per cent of the production, which, subsequently, declined to 20 per cent in 1994. Though the proportion of exports surged to around 24 per cent of the domestic output in 2003, it again fell to 17 per cent in 2007. Exports, in volume terms, fell at a compounded annual growth rate of 2.6 per cent in the 1998-2007 period.
