DP World Cochin moving import TEUs to pvt. CFSs for now to ease terminal congestion
 27/08/2008
In a determined bid to ease congestion at the Cochin Port terminal, DP World Cochin is moving import containers to private container freight stations (CFSs). The shipping lines have allowed this measure to restore normalcy at the terminal. Mr Elvis D’Cruz, Terminal Manager of DP World Cochin, said that the import consignments would be shifted to Falcon Infrastructures, Pace CFS and the Container Corporation of India’s (Concor) yard temporarily. The company proposes to move around 1,000 TEUs to Falcon Infrastructures’ CFS at Kalamassery and 300 TEUs each to Pace CFS and Concor yard in a few days. All the raw cashew imports would be stacked in the Concor yard and Pace CFS at Aroor because of their proximity to the processing centres at Kollam. The cargo, which is a mixture of both export and import consignments, is just lying in the terminal because the vessel availability has not been on schedule for the last few days, he explained. There are over 6,000 TEUs awaiting clearance. Mr D’Cruz pointed out that the permission given by the shipping lines to shift import cargo to private CFSs would also help ease congestion and achieve normalcy in the terminal soon. "By moving the entire cargo, we will get breathing time to have a smooth traffic and normal cargo handling operations in the terminal", he hoped. Moreover, the CFSs had extended additional free days for the storage of containers as an incentive, he pointed out.
