Southampton port plays host to 9,600-TEU CMA CGM giant
 27/08/2008
THE container terminal at Southampton received its largest boxship ever, the 9,600-TEU CMA CGM Orfeo. The Liberian-flagged mega vessel, weighing in at 111,200 gross tonnes, is 350 metres long and described as equivalent in length to twice the height of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome". The trend towards ever bigger containerships, in keeping with the economies of scale, has prompted terminal operators to invest in new box handling equipment, including mighty cranes long enough to stretch across the vast decks of such megaships, which are described as being as wide as a motorway. Mr Campbell Mason, Managing Director of DP World Southampton, has been quoted as saying, "This new vessel reflects the industry trend towards ever larger ships and with the recent commissioning of the terminal’s first two super post-Panamax cranes and an additional two super post-Panamax cranes scheduled to arrive next summer, we are well positioned to meet that growth".
