Spices exports buck meltdown to cross $ 1 bn during April-Feb. 2008-09 |

| Brushing aside the global financial slowdown, exports of spices during April-February 2008-09 have exceeded the $ 1-billion mark in value terms. In terms of volume, the figure is 3,95,775 tonnes.
In rupee terms, the exports yielded Rs 4,590.50 crore during the 11-month period of 2008-09, as against 3,86,875 tonnes valued at Rs 3,950.50 crore achieved in the corresponding period of 2007-08.
During the entire fiscal, exports totalled 4,44,250 tonnes valued at Rs 4,435.50 crore ($ 1,101.80 million).
Compared to the 11 months of 2007-08, the exports this fiscal have increased by 16 per cent in rupee value and 2 per cent in volume. In dollar terms, the increase is 4 per cent, the Spices Board explained.
Spice oils and oleoresins, including mint products, contributed 43 per cent of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 21 per cent, followed by pepper 8 per
cent, cumin 7 per cent and turmeric 5 per cent.
Exports of seed spices also shot up during the 11-month period.
A total of 23,350 tonnes of pepper, valued at Rs 384.10 crore, was exported during the 11-month period, as against 31,760 tonnes, valued at Rs 466.26 crore in the 11-month period of 2007-08.
The average export price of pepper has gone up from Rs 146.81 per kg in 2007-08 to Rs 164.49 per kg in 2008-09. |
