| JICA report gauges JNP & Mumbai Port capacity potential at 10.4 m TEUs in short term (2021-22)
Sees immense scope for containerised cargo at Kandla Port
A study has identified Kandla Port as having large development potential for container trade among the Major Ports on the West Coast.
The study was conducted by India-Japan joint working group (JWG) and a report prepared by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The study looks at improving connectivity between ports on the Western Coast and the dedicated rail freight corridor. It suggests that the government conduct a feasibility study of Kandla Port for its future development.
The study examines the potential capacities of Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai Port, Rewas and Dighi ports in Maharashtra as also Mundra, Port Pipavav, Hazira and Kandla Ports in Gujarat to handle projected container volumes.
In its estimate of short-term demand up to 2021-22, the study marks the potential capacity of JN Port and Mumbai Port at 10.4 million TEUs whereas the demand will be for 9.2 million TEUs.
The report, which was discussed during the second meeting of the JWG on India-Japan cooperation recently, has also proposed formulation of a grand master plan by the government for well-balanced development of all the ports on the West Coast.
For the medium-term demand up to 2031-32, the potential capacity in Maharashtra has been placed at 10.4 million TEUs whereas the demand will be for 13.3 million TEUs.
For Gujarat (Kandla, Mundra, Pipavav and Hazira Ports), the potential capacity seen is 5.2 million TEUs, while it will have a demand for 5.6 million TEUs.
In the case of Gujarat, the potential capacity has been projected at 15.6 million TEUs and the demand for 15.4 million TEUs.
The study, however, cautions that the potential port capacity will largely depend on the uncertain private investments. |
